Chewy Caterpillar liked to read books.
He read books all day long and the only time he didn't read was when he was chewing on the grass or in his bed sleeping.
The Beezles didn't see very much of Chewy, he didn't come to the garden very often. Chewy liked to read in the shade of the trees,so he stayed on the edge of the garden most days.
One day, all of the Beezles were gathered at Mrs Bee's little shop. Mrs Bee had put some tables and chairs outside her shop for her friends to sit on.
The Beezles liked to sit and chat whilst drinking lemonade and eating cookies.
Suddenly, the songbirds appeared and they were all shouting at the same time. "Hurry!Hurry! oh please hurry! Chewy Caterpillar has fallen down a hole and we can't get him out!!!"
Everyone ran to the edge of the garden. There was indeed a very big hole, right next to the rhubarb patch. They all stood round the edge of the hole looking down at poor Chewy, who had got stuck at the very very bottom of the hole!
"Don't worry Chewy!" called Buzzy, "we'll get you out of there somehow!!"
Chewy looked very scared indeed! The Beezles didn't know how to rescue him. The hole was quite deep, and no-one could think of what to do.
Just then, Mrs Bee appeared. "I know of a little boy who lives over the hedge. Do you think we could send someone over there to ask him if he could help?"
"Oh yes! Mrs Bee" said Bizzy. "I think I've heard him playing and his mummy calls him Mackenzie"
Buzzy and Bizzy flew over the hedge, while Zubby,Bazzil and Mrs Bee stood at the hole, comforting Chewy and telling him it wouldn't be long till he was rescued.
Mackenzie was in his garden playing with his toys.
When he saw Buzzy, he stood up and smiled.
Buzzy quickly told him what had happened, and Mackenzie ran into the house and told his mummy that he needed to save Chewy. He showed his mummy where he was going and then he went to his toy box and got a torch and a rope.
Mackenzie was a very clever boy indeed. He knew that he had to tell mummy and he knew that the hole would be dangerous. He couldn't go down in the hole himself or he might get stuck too!!
Quickly they all ran back to where Chewy was stuck.
"Hold on Chewy!" shouted Mackenzie "I'm going to save you! don't worry!"
Mrs Bee was very pleased that Mackenzie was here, otherwise Chewy would be stuck forever!
Mackenzie tied the rope in a loop and threw the loop into the hole. He held on tight to the other end of the rope.
"Okay Chewy"said Mackenzie "tie the rope round your waist and hold on tight!"
The Beezles all stood in a line next to Mackenzie and together they pulled and pulled and pulled at the rope.
"one, two three PULL!" cried Mackenzie.
Suddenly Chewy's Head appeared at the top of the hole.
"One more pull and that should do it!" said Mackenzie.
They all pulled on the rope again, and then there he was! Chewy lay on the grass with the rope round his waist.
"Oh thankyou Mackenzie! you are my hero!" said Chewy.
Everyone thanked Mackenzie very much for all his hard work and Mackenzie said "oh that's alright, I like to help!"
"How did it happen?" said Zubby "how did you manage to fall down a hole?"
"Well, I was reading my book" said Chewy "and I wasn't looking where I was going"
Everyone learned a lesson that day on Honeycombe Hill.
Remember to look where you are going!
Chewy gave Mackenzie his rope back and Mackenzie went home to his mummy.
"He's a very nice boy" said Mrs Bee, and all of the other Beezles agreed.
